Skin irritation
In the chosen key study for skin irritation, a study under GLP was conducted in compliance with OECD guideline 404, 0.5 ml of pure citronellyl acetate was applied to the shaved intact skin of three New Zealand White rabbits under semiocclusive condition for 4 h (BASF, 1995; 18H0369/942130). The resulting mean scores (24,48,72h) were 3.0, 2.3, 2.3 for erythema 1.0, 0.7, 0.7 for edema for each animal respectively. Erythema were fully reversible within 15 days and edema were reversible within 72 hours. Therefore, citronellyl acetate was found to be irritating to skin.
Eye irritation
In the chosen key study for eye irritation, performed under GLP according to OECD guideline 405, 0.1 ml of pure citronellyl acetate was instilled into the right eye of two female and one male New Zealand White rabbit and readings of the eyes were performed after 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours following application (BASF 1995; 11H0369/942131). The resulting mean scores (24,48,72h) for corneal opacity, iris, conjunctival redness and chemosis were 0 for each animal respectively. Therefore, citronellyl acetate was found to be non-irritating to eyes.
Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: irritating
Justification for classification or non-classification
The present data on skin irritation fulfill the criteria laid down in 67/548/EEC and regulation (EU) 1272/2008, and a classification "irritating to skin" (R38) and "skin irritant" (category 2) is warranted.
The present data on eye irritation do not fulfill the criteria laid down in 67/548/EEC and regulation (EU) 1272/2008, and therefore, a non-classification is warranted.
