Description of key information

In contact with water the substance will hydrolyse rapidly.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Titanium tetrachloride is well known to rapidly hydrolyse in contact with water: TiCl4 + H2O -> TiO2 + 4 HCl. Accordingly, TiCl4 is labeled with R14: "Reacts violently with water" in the Annex 1 of Directive 67/548/EEC. However, the determination of the rate of hydrolysis is difficult using standard methods, since the reaction consists of several intermediate stages.
