Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- not applicable
- Conclusions:
- Under the test conditions a lowest complete inhibition concentration (LCIC) of 117 µg/mL was found after 1 day for the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata, whilst a NOEC of 117 µg/mL was observed after 4 days for the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum. Thus, phenylacetonitrile may be a selective growth inhibitor for Oscillatoria perornata, but based on these results the substance cannot be classified according to the CLP regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.
- Executive summary:
The authors tested the toxicity of phenylacetonitrile (CAS n° 140-29-4) to the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria perornata and the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum in a 4d growth inhibition test. This test was a rapid bioassay test according to Schrader et al. (1997) which utilizes 96-well cell culture plates for screening substances for selective toxicity toward cyanobacteria and algae by measuring the absorbance at 650 nm. The concentrations tested were 0.0117, 0.117, 1.17, 11.7 and 117 µg/mL. Total exposure duration was 4d and every 24h the absorbance was measured of the different samples.
Under these test conditions, a lowest complete inhibition concentration (LCIC) of 117 µg/mL was found after 1 day for Oscillatoria perornata, whilst a NOEC of 117 µg/mL was observed after 4 days for Selenastrum capricornutum. In conclusion, phenylacetonitrile is selectively toxic towards Oscillatoria perornata compared to Selenastrum capricornutum. Thus, phenylacetonitrile may be a selective growth inhibitor for Oscillatoria perornata, but based on these results the substance cannot be classified according to the CLP regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.
