Description of key information
Appearance:
Chemical thymol physically appear as a white crystalline powder having aromatic-thyme odor.
Melting point:
Melting point of chemical thymol is determine to be 49.5 Deg C.
Boiling Point:
Boiling point of chemical thymol is determine to be 232.5 Deg C.
Density:
Density of chemical thymol is determine to be 0.970 g/cm3 at temperature 25 Deg C.
Particle size distribution:
The particle size distribution of thymol was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 25 micron.
Vapour pressure:
Vapour pressure of chemical thymol is determine to be 133.2 Pa at temperature 64 Deg C.
Partition coefficient:
Based on the available data from peer reviewed journal, review article, secondary source, authoritative and modelling databases, the octanol water partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the test substance 2-Isopropyl-5-methylphenol was determined to be 3.3. On the basis of this experimental value, chemical 2-Isopropyl-5-methylphenol can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.
Water solubility:
Water solubility of chemcial thymol is determine to be 900 mg/L at temperature 20 Deg C which indicates that thymol is moderately soluble in water.
Surface tension:
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. Thymol (CAS no. 89-83-8) is used as a Pharmaceuticals intermediates. For this use, surface activity is not an important property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.
Flash point:
Flash point of chemical thymol is determine to be 102 Deg C.
Auto flammability:
Thymol did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that thymol is not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
Thymol does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that thymol is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus thymol was considered non-flammable.
