Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests

Description of key information
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation 1907/2006/EC Annex IX section 9.2.1.2, the studies “Aerobic mineralisation in surface water" according to OECD 309 and "Aerobic and anaerobic transformation in aquatic sediment systems" according to OECD 308 " simulation tests” do not need to be conducted as HBED-Fe has with a mean measured Kd of 0.21 L/kg (Koc of 15.33 L/kg) no significant potential for adsorption to sediment. The substance is considered very mobile and will not sorb to sediment or soil. In addition, rapid photodegradation of the analogue substance EDDHMA-FeNa at 25 +/- 3 ° C was observed in a GLP test according to OECD 316 (draft version 1995) with half-life’s of 40.66 and 35.4 hours for the two major components of this UVCB substance using a light intensity of 4.86E20 photons/second in the wavelength range of 290 - 500 nm.
In conclusion, based on the sorption/desorption test data and high water solubility (>10 g/L) of HBED-Fe the substance will remain or migrate rapidly to the aqueous phase and will be quickly degraded photolytically when reaching the surface water. Therefore, no further water/sediment simulation testing is considered to be needed.
