EL50/EL10 (72h) >= 100 mg/L (loading rate WSF) for growth rate of Desmodesmus subspicatus (OECD 201, read across)

One study investigating the toxicity of Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., methyl esters (CAS No. 1234694-02-0) to algae is available (Migchielsen, 2010). This test was conducted according to OECD 201, under GLP conditions. Due to the insolubility of the substance in the test medium, analytical determinations of test concentrations (WAFs) were not possible. Undissolved test material was present in the test solutions, probably causing the observed effects at the highest loading rates (32 and 100 mg/L WAFs) by physical interference with algae (eg. adsorption to algae surface). Due to this fact, concentrations were during the whole testing period below the limit of detection of the analytical method (even at t=0). Based on the above argumentation, this study is considered not reliable.
Therefore, data from a structurally related category member, Fatty acids, C12 -14 (even numbered), methyl ester (CAS No. 308065-15-8) are used as read-across (according to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5). Both substances are fatty acids esterified with methanol, containing C12 -16 (source substance) and C12-16 and C18 unsaturated (target substance) fatty acids. Furthermore, the water solubility values (< 1 mg/L for both) of these two substances indicate that a comparable behaviour in water can be expected. Based on this information, it is justified to use the toxicity data from Fatty acids, C12-14 (even numbered), methyl esters as read-across for Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., methyl esters (CAS No. 1234694-02-0) in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5, for this endpoint.
The toxicity of Fatty acids, C12-14 (even numbered), methyl ester (CAS 308065-15-8) to freshwater algae was investigated according to OECD guideline 201 and GLP using Desmodesmus subspicatus as test organism. A nominal loading rate WSFs of 100 mg/ was tested as limit test. Due to the insolubility of the test item, no analytical evaluation of the limit test item loading and the control was carried out. No significant effects were observed in the control and any treatment after 72 h exposure time. Thus, the 72h-EL50 and EL10 value is determined to be >= 100 mg/L.
Based on the above information, similar results to those of the test conducted on the structurally related category member (in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5) could be expected for Fatty acids, C12-16 (even numbered) and C18 unsatd., methyl esters.
