Description of key information
Chromium trinitrate in 75 % water, as placed on the market, was not found to be an oxidizer. However, solid chromium trinitrate nonahydrate is considered to be an oxidiser.

The oxidising properties (liquid) analysis of the substance chromium trinitrate 75 % solution in water, as placed on the market, was performed according to EU A21. The mean pressure rise time of 7720 ms for the chromium trinitrate sample in water is longer than the mean pressure rise time of 4894 ms taken for the 65 % nitric acid reference sample. Thus, chromium trinitrate in 75 % water was not found to be an oxidizer. However, it can be reasonably assumed that chromium trinitrate nonahydrate, having almost an identical nitrate content as barium nitrate, the reference substance in EU-method A.17 for oxidising solids, is an oxidiser too and this is supported by the "UN Recommendations of the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Model Regulations, Twelfth revised Edition" entry under UN 2720 naming chromium trinitrate as an oxidiser, class 5.1, packaging group III. However, a valid test could not be identified.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Chromium trinitrate nonahydrate, in it's solid crystalline form, is considered being an oxidising solid, category 3 according to CLP (Regulation EC No 1272/2008) and according to DSD (Directive 67/548/EEC) classified as O, R8. However, as placed on the market in form of an 70 -75% aqueous solution, the aqueous mixture is not considered being oxidising as shown by an EU.A21 test for oxidising liquids.
