Three short-term toxicity tests, including two fresh tests and one marine test were available and one long-term toxicity test was available.
A short-term toxicity study to fresh fish was conducted to determine the acute effects of the test substance on the early life stages of steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri). Eight concentrations of 1100, 1933, 1966, 2900, 3100, 3966, 5650, 5825 µg/L and a control administrated to the test fish. After 96 hours exposure, the 96-h LC50 of 4400 µg/L chromium was obtained with two-month-old juvenile fish.
Another short-term toxicity test for fresh fish was performed. And the 96-hour toxicity bioassays was conducted in a mobile bioassay laboratory and conducted according to standard method using a continuous flow proportional diluter to evaluate the short-term toxicity of the test substance to 2-month-old rainbow trout. 4.02-64.25 mg/kg were applied to the test fish. After 96 hours exposure, the 96-h LC50 of the test substance to (2-month-old) rainbow trout was 24.09 mg/L. In static tests with marine fish (juvenile mullet), the 96-h LC50 values for the test substance was 53 mg/L.
An early-life stages test was conducted to determine the chronic effects of trivalent chromium, added as chromium trinitrate, on the early life stages of steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri). Exposure during the chronic test lasted 72 d for newly fertilized eggs. Nine concentrations of <5, 9, 13, 19, 30, 48, 89, 157, 271 µg/L and two controls were applied to test fish.
The LOEC of the test substance to steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) was 0.089 mg/l and NOEC was 0.048 mg/L were derived after 72 days exposure from newly fertilized eggs to feeding fry.
Thus, the 96-h LC50 of 4400 µg/L chromium with two-month-old fresh juvenile fish was taken as the key value for classification and CSA . And 96-h LC50 of 53 mg/L was taken as the key value for marine juvenile mullet for CSA.
The LOEC of the test substance to steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) of 0.089 mg/l and NOEC of 0.048 mg/L were taken as the key value for CSA.
