Substance characterisation
The test substance Peppermint oil is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) for which > 90% of the constituents is identified. The main constituents are predominantly cyclic monoterpene alcohols (like menthol), ketones (like menthone) and other monoterpenes comprising circa 77% of the composition.
This composition represents a relatively homogenous type of NCS. For the environmental risk assessment the properties of the major representatives of this group (Menthol and Menthone and isomers) may be considered. However, according to the DPD+ method, the lead substance for the risk assesment is the constituent L-limonene. The constituents all have different properties for water solubility, volatility, adsorption and lipophility that determine their environmental behaviour. Due to these differences the assessment of the environmental properties of Peppermint Oil is preferably based on data for the individual constituents.
Based on the constituent approach as described in the industry protocol for the REACH registration of NCSs of botanical origin used as fragrance ingredients (see footnote 1), the water solubility ranges from 0.5 to 3500 mg/l for the constituents. The menthol/menthone fraction is highly soluble (ca. 900 mg/l).
The estimated vapour pressure of Peppermint Oil was 44 Pa, ranging from 1 to 981 Pa for the constituents. For the major constituents (typically circa 80 % of the composition) the vapour pressure is below 50 Pa and 10 % of the constituents composition has a high vapour pressure (> 100 Pa). This indicates that partitioning by volatilisation may play a role.
The Log Kow of the constituents ranges from 2.73 to 6.99. Log Kow is below 3 for 26 % and below 4.5 for 93.8 % of the typical constituent composition. Thus the major part of the constituents have a low to moderate capacity to sorb to organic matter.
The BCF of the constituents in peppermint oil was calculated to be in the range of 30 – 19,000. For the major constituents, typically 85% of the NCS, the estimated BCF is 59.1.
Peppermint Oil is to be considered as a readily biodegradable substance.
