- Conclusions:
- Because of the unkown accuracy on the measurements and the observed deviation to the OECD guideline No. 105 the water solubility is given as an estimated range.
The estimated range is between 0.005 and 0.01 g/l at 19.9°C. - Executive summary:
The water solubility study of the test item was carried out with the slow stirring method according to recognized guidelines (EU A.6 method and OECD 105) and under GLP.
The SULFONYL VINYL ETHER PERFLUORURATE is a volatile liquid (vapour pressure of 12 kPa at 20°C) and it possesses a limited solubility in water. As consequence of its properties an evaporation of the test item was observed from aqueous samples during the development of the analytical method. As a result, very low accuracy and recovery results ( < 18%, 21% at the two evaluated concentrations) were obtained from aqueous test item solutions and it was not possible to fulfill the validation criteria of the analytical method. Because of the substance properties it was considered not possible to improve the performance of the method.
During the water solubility studies all possible precautions [avoiding headspace in the container as much as possible, adding test item through the septum avoiding turbulent mixing of the two phases; stirring gently at 100 rpm; samples pipetted directly into dichloromethane] were taken to prevent loss of test item due to evaporation during the study.
Spite of this, the magnitude of the error on the analytical measurements due to volatilization of the test item from water samples is unknown because no measure of the accuracy of the analytical method is available.
Moreover a deviation from the requirement of OECD guideline 105 was observed during the study. Indeed, the obtained results differ by more than 15%. This high variation in the results, is considered to be due to the test item properties (volatile liquid with limited water solubility).
Because of the unkown accuracy on the measurements and the observed deviation to the OECD guideline No. 105 the water solubility is given as an estimated range.
The estimated range is between 0.005 to 0.01 g/l at 19.9°C.
Reference
Preliminary test :
The content of test item dissolved in the water sample was below the limit of detection <0.018 mg/l
Main test:
No test substance was detected in the pretreated sample from the blank sample.
Despite all the precautions taken to avoid the loss of the test substance (avoiding headspace in the flask as much as possible, adding the test substance through the septum avoiding turbulent mixing of the two phases, aqueous sample pipetted directed into an organic solvent), a volatilisation of the test item has occurred. Therefore, the measured concentration of the test substance in water could be affected by this loss.
The magnitude of this effect is unknown, so the water solubility was given as an estimated range of 0.005 to 0.01 g/l at 19.9°C.
Description of key information
The substance is observed to be poorly soluble in water but the exact water solubility value is unkown.
No reliable measurement of the water solubility of SULFONYL VINYL ETHER PERFLUORURATE is available due to the lack of a reliable validated analytical method.
The impossibility of establishing a reliable validated method is due to the test item properties (volatile liquid with limited water solubility).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Due to the substance properties (high volatility, low water solubility) no validated analytical method for the measurement of PFSVE in water is established.
Nevertheless the water solubility study of the test item was carried out with according to recognized guidelines (EU A.6 method and OECD 105) and under GLP. All the possible precautions to prevent loss of test item due to volatilization during the experimental and the analytical phases were applied.
Due to the lack of validation, the accuracy of the analytical measurements obtained in the water solubility study is unknown.
Moreover concentrations in the different samples from the main study differed more than 15% resulting in a deviation from the requirements of OECD guideline No. 105.
Basing on the the above, the results of this test are considered not reliable.
Due to substance properties more accurate results were not expected.
