The determination of biodegradation was evaluated on the Similar substance 01, according to the EEC Directive 79 -831, Annex V. C.7, based on the OECD Guideline 301C (Ready Biodegradability: Modified MITI Test (I)) and OECD Guideline 301A (Ready Biodegradability: Modified AFNOR Test).
The Similar substance 01 was not biodegraded under the test condition.
On the similar substance 01, BOD versus ThOD and COD were also measured at 28 days showed a non biodegradability.
In addition, BOD5 and COD values on the Similar substance 01 have been used in a weight of evidence approach to evaluate the registered substance.
As a matter of fact, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) are the most commonly used parameters for the characterization of the biodegradability capacity.
COD results are typically higher than BOD5 values, and the ratio vary depending on the characteristics of the substrate. This ratio has been commonly used as an indicator for biodegradation capacity, the “Biodegradability index” (B.I.).
As indicated in ECHA Guidance requirement R.7B, the BOD5 test is a traditional biodegradation test that is now replaced by the ready biodegradability tests. Therefore, this test should not be performed today for assessment of the ready biodegradability of substances. Older test data may however be used when no other degradability data are available.
The value of the analytical determination of COD of was 1106 mg/g O2. The value of the measured BOD5, corrected with the blank control was 0 mg/g O2.
The ratio BOD5/COD is 0 (if => 0.5, the substance is regarded as being readily biodegradable), therefore the Similar substance 01 showed no biodegradability.
As a conclusion, according to the read-across principle, the registered substance is considered no ready biodegradable. Justification for read-across is detailed in the report attached to the IUCLID section 13.
