The hazard assessment is based on the current data available. A new long-term fish toxicity study (OECD 210) is requested for the registered substance based on the ECHA decision on a compliance check (decision number CCH-D-2114588821-38-01/F). The long-term fish toxicity study could not be finalised until now due to the reasons explained under the respective endpoint (see chapter 6.1.2). The finalised study will be submitted later based on ECHA decision number CCH-D-2114588821-38-01/F. The aquatic toxicity will be re-evaluated in the update of this dossier as soon as the final long-term fish toxicity study will be available.
There are no ecotoxicoloigcal data available for Monopentaerythritol tetraesters and dipentaerythritol hexaesters of valeric, heptanoic and nonanoic acids. Therefore, read-across to the structurally related substances Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9), Tetra-esterification products of C5, C7, C8, C10 fatty acids with pentraerythrito (CAS 68424-31-7), Carboxylic acids, C5-9, tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 67762-53-2), Fatty acids, C8-10 mixed esters with dipenaterythritol, isooctanoic acid, pentaerythritol and tripentaerythritol (CAS 189200-42-8) and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS 25151-96-6) was conducted in order to fulfil the standard information requirements in compliance with Annex XI, 1.5, of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Based on the high degree of similarity between the structural and physico-chemical properties of the target and source substances, the source substances are considered as suitable representatives for the assessment of the short-term toxicity to fish and aquatic invertebrates, the long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates, the toxicity to algae and to microorganisms. A detailed analogue approach justification is provided in the technical dossier (see IUCLID Section 13).
All experimental studies available for the source substances were performed according to internationally accepted guidelines.
The short-term toxicity to fish was determined in studies according to OECD guideline 203 and ISO 7346-1 for the source substances Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9), Tetra-esterification products of C5, C7, C8, C10 fatty acids with pentraerythrito (CAS 68424-31-7), Carboxylic acids, C5-9, tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 67762-53-2), Fatty acids, C8-10 mixed esters with dipenaterythritol, isooctanoic acid, pentaerythritol and tripentaerythritol (CAS 189200-42-8) and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS 25151-96-6). No effects were observed up to the limit of water solubility.
The short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was determined according to OECD guideline 202 for the source substances Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9), Carboxylic acids, C5-9, tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS 67762-53-2) and Fatty acids, C8-10 mixed esters with dipenaterythritol, isooctanoic acid, pentaerythritol and tripentaerythritol (CAS 189200-42-8). No effects were observed up to the limit of water solubility.
The long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was tested according to OECD guideline 211 for the source substance Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9) using Daphnia magna as test organism. No significant effects on reproduction were observed in this test with a loading rate of 135 mg/L (nominal). Thus, no effects occurred up to the limit of water solubility.
The toxicity to algae was investigated according to OECD guideline 201 for the source substance Fatty acids, C8-10 mixed esters with dipenaterythritol, isooctanoic acid, pentaerythritol and tripentaerythritol (CAS 189200-42-8). No effects were observed up to the limit of water solubility.
The toxicity to microorganisms was determined according to OECD guideline 209 for the source substances Decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, pentaerythritol and valeric acid (CAS 71010-76-9) and Tetra-esterification products of C5, C7, C8, C10 fatty acids with pentraerythrito (CAS 68424-31-7). No effects were observed up to the limit of water solubility.
