Additional information

Flammability of solids

A test on the flammability was conducted for two solid substances representing (i) one metal carboxylates with a lower hydrocarbon content and a cation in the highest oxidation state (Zn(+II)): octanoic acid, zinc salt, basic (77.5 % carbon content) (ii) one metal carboxylate with a higher carbon content and a cation in a high oxidation state (Zn(+II)): Zinc didocosanoate (91.5 % carbon content). Both tests yielded a result of “not flammable”. Since zinc dioctanoate is also an inorganic metal carboxylate containing the metal cation in the highest oxidised status and an anion of an acid which is less susceptible to any form of oxidation than zinc didocosanoate (i.e. a lower hydro-carbon content 82 %), zinc dioctanoate can be regarded as "not flammable". Further testing is not required in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, Section 1.1.1. A classification as flammable solid is not warranted.

Flammability in contact with water

The substance does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of the substance shows that it does not react with water (cf. Section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006).

Pyrophoric properties

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied. Zinc dioctanoate is stable at ambient temperature. It also does not contain any chemical groups that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming in contact with air at room temperature (ca. 20 °C). Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that zinc dioctanoate does not ignite in contact with air (cf. Section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006) .

Justification for classification or non-classification

Zinc dioctanoate does not need to be classified according to CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 since it is not highly flammable.
