Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Remarks:
The test item did not emit any gas in contact with water during any of the 4 steps of the test procedure.
Conclusions:
The test item is not flammable in contact with water based on GHS/CLP criteria at the time of submission.
Executive summary:

EU Methods A.12. – The flammability of the test item in contact with water was determined using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method A.12. Flammability (Contact with Water) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Remarks:
The test item did not ignite in contact with air during either step of the test procedure.
Conclusions:
The test item does not have pyrophoric properties.
Executive summary:

EU Methods A.13. – The pyrophoric properties of the test item were determined using procedures designed to be compatible with A.13. Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

An aliquot (approximately 5 cm3) of test item was poured onto a kieselguhr (height 5 mm) and it was observed whether the test item ignited within five minutes. The test was performed at ambient temperature six times.  If no ignition a fresh aliquot (approximately 5 ml) was added to an indented filter paper.  It was observed whether ignition or charring of the filter paper occurred within five minutes of the liquid being added. The test was performed at ambient temperature three times unless ignition or charring occurred.

The test item did not ignite when exposed air when in contact with either kieselguhr or filter paper.

The test item cannot be categorised in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (Classification Labelling and Packaging) of 16 December 2008.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
The study does not need to be conducted as the substance is a liquid. The flammability of a liquid is assessed on the basis of flash point.

Description of key information

Flammability: Not flammable; EU Method A.12. and EU Method A.13.; H Smeykal (2017).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The reaction of the test item with water and air was determined in accordance with test guidelines EU Method A.12 and A.13 respectively and UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria, Revision 6 (2015).

The test item does not emit any gas when brought in to contact with water or ignite when brought in to contact with air. As such the test item is not regarded as flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

EU Methods A.12. and A.13. –  As the test item is a liquid, the flammability of the test item in contact with water and the pyrophoric properties of the test item were determined.  This was achieved using procedures designed to be compatible with Method A.12. Flammability (Contact with Water) and A.13. Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

EU Method A.12.:  Increasing quantities of test item were brought in to contact with water in a prescribed and stepwise manner.  Following each introduction of test item and water, it was noted whether (i) any gas was evolved and (ii) if ignition of the gas occurred.

The test item did not emit any gas in contact with water.

EU Method A.13.: An aliquot (approximately 5 cm3) of test item was poured onto a kieselguhr (height 5 mm) and it was observed whether the test item ignited within five minutes.

For liquid test items, flammability is determined on the basis of flash point.  The flashpoint of the test item is above the classification criteria for flammability of liquids, further the test item did not emit any gas in contact with water nor did it ignite when exposed air when in contact with either kieselguhr or filter paper.  Therefore the test item cannot be categorised in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (Classification Labelling and Packaging) of 16 December 2008.
