Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is an organic substance or mixture containing chemical groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500°C
Justification for type of information:
According to the Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria (Version 4.1, June 2015), the explosive properties do not need to be experimentally determined if there are chemical groups associated with explosive properties but " the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/kg and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500°C.

Based on the DSC curve determined during the determination of the melting and boiling temperature, exothermic decomposition occurred around 250°C. The heat flow was measured and using the rate of heat transfer (1W = 1J/s) and the fact that the temperature was increased at a rate of 20°C/min, the exothermic decomposition energy can be determined.

The heat flow increased from -4.5 to 4.5 W/g over 30 s (equivalent of 10°C at 20°C/min). This corresponds with an exothermic decomposition energy of 9 W/kg * 1 J/s * 30 s = 270 J/g.

Therefore, the explosive properties did not need to be determined.

Description of key information

No explosive properties have been determined based on the exothermic decomposition energy.
