- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 15 Aug to 31 Oct 2019

- Guideline:
- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.4 (Test method for self-heating substances)
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Remarks:
- Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
- Test procedure:
- 100 mm sample cube at 140°C
- Induction time (h):
- 24
- Result:
- negative outcome (no effect observed)
- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Preliminary screening test
The pile burnt with a large orange flame which emitted grey smoke and left a small clear waxy residue. Time taken to propagate 200 mm was 10 seconds.
Main Test
The pile burnt with a large orange flame which emitted grey smoke and left a small clear waxy residue. Time taken to propagate combustion over 100 mm after an initial burning distance of 80 mm was 4 seconds. The wetted zone did not stop propagation of the flame.
Conclusion
The test item is classified as a category 1 flammable solid.
Results
The sample showed no signs of self-ignition or significant self-heating over the duration of the test.
Conclusion
The test item is not classified as a self-heating substance.
Description of key information
No pyrophoricity
Non flammable
No flammability on contact with water
Not self-heating
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified
Additional information
Non pyrophoric, non flammable and not self-heating solid.
Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, flammability on contact with water is not to be expected.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The available data on flammability, pyrophoricity and flammbility in contact with water do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 or Directive 67/548/EEC and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water are not expected.
