In a 96 hour short-term toxicity study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to 2-(2-Hexyloxyethoxy)ethanol at nominal concentrations of 0 (control) and 120 mg/L under static conditions in accordance with the OECD 203 test guideline and under GLP (BASF SE, 2021; report no. 17F0091/20E008). The water pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen were within acceptable guideline specifications. The 96 hour LC50 was > 120 mg/L based on the nominal concentration of the test substance. Since the measured concentrations of the test substance in the test solutions were within ±20% of the nominal concentrations, the effect concentration can be expressed relative to the nominal concentration for the evaluation of the test substance. The results in this study are consistent with all validity criteria and the test is valid according to the guidelines of this study. No deviations from test guidelines or other incidents occurred during the course of the reported test which may have influenced the results.
The key study is supported by the results of a further short-term toxicity study according to OECD TG 203 (Dow,1999, report no. K-005613-001). In this study, freshwater fish (Pimephales sp.) were exposed for 96 hours to five concentrations of test substance under static conditions. No analytical verification of the test material performed. The 96-hour LC50 of the test material was calculated to be 200 mg/L.
It can be concluded that the substance is with high probability acutely not harmful to fish.
