No toxicity data on terrestrial plants are available for 2,2-bis(chloromethyl)trimethylene bis(bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphate).
Long-term effects on higher plants were measured for tris(2-chloro-1-methylethyl) phosphate (TCPP) in 2003.
Read-across
Read-across of the long-term effects data on higher plants from TCPP could be considered on the following grounds:
- TCPP and 2,2-bis(chloromethyl)trimethylene bis(bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphate) have similar soil adsorption properties (see also section 5.4.1 Adsorption/desorption) indicating that the bioavailability of the substances to soil organisms could be comparable. In particular the closeness in value of log Kow and log Koc values between the substances suggests that they would be expected to partition in the terrestrial environment in a very similar way.
- Test results suggest a consistent pattern of toxicity for TCPP and 2,2-bis(chloromethyl)trimethylene bis(bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphate). This is indicative of a consistent mode of action in higher plants, and the similarities in chemical structure between the substances would support this.
- Reliable chronic toxicity data for aquatic plants (freshwater algae) indicate that the NOEC for 2,2-bis(chloromethyl)trimethylene bis(bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphate) lies within a factor of only 4 of the EC10 value for TCPP (NOEC = 10 mg/L, resp. EC10 = 42 mg/L. not further reported here).
Long-term toxicity
The study reported the results of emergence and growth tests with the plant species Triticum aestivum (Wheat), Sinapis alba (Mustard) , Lactuca sativa (Lettuce) exposed to TCPP. The tests fulfilled the criteria for acceptability for determining a PNEC. The lowest NOEC determined in the tests was 17 mg/kg dry weight for emergence of L.sativa seedlings. The lowest NOECs determined for S. alba and L. sativa were 28 and 18 mg/kg respectively based on 21-day post emergence plant wet weight.
