Short-term toxicity to fish

A short-term toxicity to fish test with cesium nitrate is not available. Consequently, read-across to the structural analogue cesium hydroxide monohydrate was applied.

Under the conditions of this acute fish toxicity study the observed endpoints for the effect of cesium hydroxide monohydrate were the following: 96h NOEC ≥ 100 mg test item/L and 96h LC50 > 100 mg test item/L. Based on these data the calculated values of 96h-LC50 and 96h-NOEC for cesium nitrate are greater than 116.06 mg/L and the calculate values of 96h-LC50 and 96h-NOEC for cesium are greater than 79.14 mg/L.

Long-term toxicity to fish

A long-term toxicity test to fish with cesium nitrate was not available. Consequently, read-across to the structural analogue cesium hydroxide monohydrate was applied.

In an early life stage toxicity study (FELS, OECD guideline 210) in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) with cesium hydroxide monohydrate, no significant lethal or sub-lethal effects were observed. The calculated endpoints (35 days LOEC and NOEC) obtained were > 43 mg test item/L and 43.0 mg test item/L respectively. Based on these data, the calculated NOEC for cesium nitrate was 49.91 mg/L and the LOEC was greater than 49.91 mg/L. In addition to this data, the calculated NOEC for cesium was 34.03 mg/L and the LOEC for cesium was also greater than 34.03 mg/L

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

The acute toxicity to invertebrates was assessed with cesium nitrate according to OECD guideline 202 and EU-method C.2. In this 48-hour acute toxicity test with daphnia, the EC50 value was determined to be 98.4 mg/L and the 48 h NOEC was determined to be 76.9 mg/L (nominal concentration).

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

A long-term toxicity test to invertebrates with cesium nitrate was not available. Consequently, read-across to the structural analogue cesium hydroxide monohydrate was applied.

Under the conditions of this chronic daphnia toxicity study the observed endpoints related to reproduction for the effect of cesium hydroxide monohydrate were the following: 21d NOEC: 15.8 mg/L; 21d LOEC: 30.0 mg/L; 21d EC50: > 15.8 mg/L. All reported biological results are related to the nominal concentrations. Based on these data, the calculated 21d-NOEC for cesium nitrate was 18.33 mg/L, the 21d-EC50 > 18.33 mg/L and the LOEC = 34.82 mg/L. In addition to this data the calculated 21d-NOEC for cesium was 12.5 mg/L, the 21d-EC50 > 12.5 mg/L and the LOEC = 23.74 mg/L.

Toxicity to algae and cyanobacteria

A toxicity test to algae and cyanobacteria with cesium nitrate was not available. Consequently, read-across to the structural analogue cesium hydroxide monohydrate was applied.

Under the conditions of this acute algal growth inhibition test on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata the observed endpoints for the effect of cesium hydroxide monohydrate based on the growth rate were the following: 72h EC50 value: 133.99 mg test item/L; 72h NOEC value: 12.5 mg test item/L and 72h LOEC value: 25 mg test item/L. Based on these data the 72h-EC50 calculated for cesium nitrate was 155.52 mg/L., the 72h-NOEC was 14.51 mg/L and the 72h LOEC was 29.02 mg/L.In addition to this data, the 72h-EC50 calculated for cesium was 106.04 mg/L, the 72h-LOEC was 9.89 mg/L and the 72h-NOEC was 19.79 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms

A toxicity test to microorganisms with cesium nitrate was not available. Consequently, read-across to the structural analogue cesium hydroxide monohydrate was applied.

The toxicity to microorganisms of cesium hydroxide monohydrate was tested according to OECD guideline 209 and EU method C.11. Activated sludge was exposed at a nominal concentration of 1000 mg /L (limit test). The EC10 and EC50 value was determined to be greater than 1000 mg/L.

Based on these data, the calculated EC10 and EC50 values of cesium nitrate were greater than 1160.66 mg/L and the NOEC was 1160.66 mg/L. In addition to these data, the calculated EC10 and EC50 values of cesium were greater than 791.43 mg/L and the NOEC was 791.43 mg/L.
