Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The constituents in the water-soluble fraction of SAS demonstrated measured log Pows of <0, while the constituents in the methanol-soluble fraction of Soltex® Additive (85% SAS) demonstrated measured log Pows of <0, 1.1, 3.2, and >6.2.

Additional information

Chemex Environmental International (2003) used OECD Guideline 117 to determine the octanol-water partition coefficient of sulphonated asphalt additive. The test material was about 75% soluble in water. All peaks measured for the water soluble portion of the sample, had log Pow values less than 0, indicative of little tendency to accumulate in the environment. This study was considered more relevant to assess the bioaccumulation potential of SAS, because the test substance was prepared at an environmentally-relevant pH (approximate pH of seawater, 8), as stated in the OECD test guideline. Another study was performed on Soltex® Shale Inhibitor (85% SAS) according to OECD Guideline 117. The test material did not completely dissolve in organic solvents, so the results are based only upon the fraction that was soluble in methanol (the best solvent). The reported log Pows were <0 for four major peaks, 1.1 and 3.2 for two other major peaks and >6.2 for two other major peaks. These results were determined for the fraction soluble in methanol only, as other solvents tested resulted in even less solubility.
