- GALDEN LMW meets the approval requirements for FM Approval Standard 6930 Flammabilty Classification of industrial fluids.
- Executive summary:
GALDEN LMW was characterized for its flammability properties during the approval process for Flammability Classification of Industrial fluids perfomerd by the FM Global mutual insurance company. The evaluation was performed on GALDEN LMW together with other several products of GALDEN family, H-GALDEN family and FOMBLIN family.
The FM Approval Standard for Flammability Classification of Industrial fluids, Class 6930, states the approval requirements for the flammability rating for industrial fluids intended for use as, but not limited to, lubricants, hydraulic power transmission, turbine governor control, heat transfer, transformer insulation and cooling fluid.
The FM Approval Standard evaluates the flammability characteristics of fluids intended for use in industrial equipment by determining their chemical heat release rate from spray fires and the fluid’s critical heat flux for ignition, or by determining the critical temperature to sustain combustion. Based on these values, a spray flammability Parameter (SFP) or Adiabatic Stechiometric Flame Temperature (T ad,cr) can be calculated. The SFP or the (T ad,cr) is then used as the basis to classifying fluid and is useful in determining acceptable fire protection techniques and requirements applicable to a given installation in accordance with FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet.
An industrial fluid that meets the requirements of this standard shall be eligible to be flammability rated as FM approved.
According to FM Approval standard procedure for Flammability Classification of Industrial Fluids_Class Number 6930, samples of GALDEN LMW, together with samples of other products of GALDEN family, H-GALDEN family and FOMBLIN family (63 products in all) was taken by a representative of FM Approvals at the manufacturing facilities. All samples were considered representative of standard production and were examined.
Samples of 13 products, considered to be representative of the array of fluids for which Approval was requested, were selected for testing from the above reported families GALDEN, H-GALDEN and FOMBLIN.
GALDEN LMW was one of the selected and tested products.
The following tests were conducted:
- Determination of Chemical heat release rate of industrial fluids in FM Approval 200kW-Scale Fire Product Collector was performed on samples of all products.
- ASTM D92-05a Standard test method for Flash and Fire points by Cleveland Open Cup Tester
- ASTM D 5865 Total Heat of Combustion
- ASTM D 1480-02 Standard test method for Density and Relative Density (Specific Gravity) of Viscous materials by Bingham Pycnometer.
As result of the reported flammability assessment it can be stated that GALDEN LMW, as well as the other tested products, meets the approval requirements for FM Approval Standard 6930 Flammabilty Classification of industrial fluids.

- Conclusions:
- GALDEN LMW, as all other PFPEs, possesses high thermal stability and high oxidative stability and it is not flammable and does not show self-ignition temperature in air at atmospheric pressure. The high stability can be explaned from their fluorinated structures.
- Executive summary:
The publication is aimed to describe the relationships between structure and properties in the class of Perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs), which includes GALDEN-FOMBLIN fluids. FOMBLIN and GALDEN belong to the same class of PFPEs since GALDEN represents the low molecular weight fraction of FOMBLIN.
The physico-chemical, thermodynamic, transitional and rheological properties of the four major types of PFPE polymers commercially produced from the three existing manufacturing companies are discussed, in relation with the chemical structure.
The main structural differences among the various types of PFPEs are related to the different chemical structures of the repeating units, whereas the differences in length of the chain are seen as changes of grade of the given product.
GALDEN and FOMBLIN fluids were discussed as members of one of the four types of PFPEs.
The publication reports that PFPEs are not flammable and do not show self-ignition temperature in air under atmospheric pressure.
The thermal and oxidative stability of PFPEs was also discussed.
As reported, PFPEs are chemically inhert to the majority of reagent including oxidizing agents and, in comparison to hydrocarbon materials, the PFPEs enjoy inhanced thermodynamic stability and kinetic invulnerability.
The thermal oxidative stability of PFPEs was determined by gravimetric analysis (TGA) on FOMBLIN fluids. The decomposition onset occurred at temperature exceeding 350 °C.
The publication reports that the larger C—F (fluorocarbon) versus C—H (hydrocarbon) bond dissociation energies (the difference is about 100-120 kJ/mol when perfluorinated molecules are compared with hydrogenated ones) is explaned, among others, by the hybridization effects. Perfluorination is reported as bringing, along similar lines, about a strengthening influence on both C—C and C—O single bonds (roughly 35 and 90 kJ/mol, respectively). In addition to affect the thermal stability, the perfluorination introduces a network of highly electronegative fluorine substituents, each having dimensionally protunding p-electron clouds that form a veritable barrier toward reagent aggression upon the carbon backbone.
Basing on the above-reported it can be affirm that GALDEN LMW, as all other PFPEs, possesses high thermal stability and high oxidative stability and it is not flammable and does not show self-ignition temperature in air at atmospheric pressure. The high stability can be explaned from their fluorinated structures.

- Conclusions:
- GALDEN LMW, as all other PFPEs, possess high thermal stability and high oxidative stability and it is not flammable and does not show self-ignition temperature in air at atmospheric pressure.
- Executive summary:
The scope of the publication was to analyse perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) from the point of view of their synthetic chemistry, properties, derivatives, and applications.
The focus of the publication is on PFPE fluids commercially named FOMBLIN (both with linear and branched chemical structures) and GALDEN and the information gleaned from first-hand experience are reported. FOMBLIN and GALDEN belong to the same class of PFPEs since GALDEN represents the low molecular weight fraction of branched FOMBLIN.
The pubblication reports that PFPEs are not flammable and do not show self-ignition temperature in air at atmospheric pressure.
The thermal properties and the oxidative stability of PFPEs were also discussed. The pubblication reports that thermooxidative stability of PFPEs is outstanding and that extreme resistance to oxidants, for example O2 and F2, is a characteristic of PFPEs.
The result of thermooxidative stability tests performed on FOMBLIN fluids are reported. The stability was tested both by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and by an indipendent isoteniscope method. TGA shows onset of decomposition at temperatures exceding 350°C, both methods give similar values and indicate little dependence on molecular weight.
Resistence to oxidants was tried by an indicative ignition temperature for branched FOMBLIN fluids of molecular weight 3000 of 395°C at 3370 psi of O2. As reported, the value varies slightly with molecular weight and oxygen concentration.
Basing on the above-reported it can be affirm that GALDEN LMW, as all other PFPEs, possess high thermal stability and high oxidative stability and it is not flammable and show no self-ignition temperature in air at atmospheric pressure.

RESULTS
ASTM D 92 Standard test method for Flash and Fire points by Cleveland Open Cup Tester
A flash or fire point for each of the tested fluids, including GALDEN LMW, could not be determined. In each case the test sample boiled when subjected to a heat source and the test was terminated.
FM Approval determination of Chemical Heat Release Rate in FM Approval 200kW-Scale Fire Product Collector
The Chemical Release Rate is considered satisfactory if equal to or less than 130 kW.
The Chemical Heat Release Rate in Spray Fire for GALDEN LMW is 24 kW.
Since the value is below the limit value of 130 kW, GALDEN LMW satisfies the requirement.
ASTM D 5865 Total Heat of Combustion
This testing was performed on the 4 fluids determined to have the highest Chemical Heat Release Rate in the spray fire test. The total heat of combustion is considered satisfactory if equal to 4kJ/g or less.
GALDEN LMW was not one of the 4 fluids determined to have the highest Chemical Heat Release Rate in the spray fire test, therefore it was not tested for Total Heat of Combustion. However, all the 4 fluids tested for Total Heat of Combustion gave satisfactory results since for all of them the result was < 1 kJ/g.
ASTM D 1480 Standard test method for Density and Relative Density (Specific Gravity) of Viscous materials by Bingham Pycnometer.
Density of each of the fluids was determined for identification purpose.
Description of key information
GALDEN LMW is not flammable, not pyrophoric and shows no flammability on contact with water.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
Flash and fire points determination of GALDEN LMW was performed until boiling point. Both the flash point, which is the key measure of the flammability of a liquid, and the fire point, could not be determined. GALDEN LMW is therefore to be considered a non flammable liquid.
Furthermore both the chemical heat release rate in spray fire and the total heat of combustion of GALDEN LMW satisfy the approval requirents of FM Approval Class 6930. FNM Standard for Flammability Classification of Industrial fluids states the requirements for the flammability rating of industrial fluids intended for use in industrial equipment. An industrial fluid that meets the requirements of this standard is eligible to be flammability rated as FM approved.
The following tests were conducted for FM assessment:
- Determination of Chemical heat release rate of industrial fluids in FM Approval 200kW-Scale Fire Product Collector was performed on samples of all products.
- ASTM D92-05a Standard test method for Flash and Fire points by Cleveland Open Cup Tester
- ASTM D 5865 Total Heat of Combustion
- ASTM D 1480-02 Standard test method for Density and Relative Density (Specific Gravity) of Viscous materials by Bingham Pycnometer.
The entire assessment for the FM approval of GALDEN LMW is reported as supporting information for this endpoint.
In addition, two scientific publications are reported, which discuss the thermal and oxidative stability of PFPEs mentioning several experimental results confirming the stability. The publications expressly report PFPEs as not flammable and not pyrophoric fluids.
Justification for classification or non-classification
According to Regulation EC No. 1272/2008, the GALDEN LMW does not meet the classification criteria for flammable liquid.
