Description of key information
The chemical safety assessment according to Annex I of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 does not indicate the need to investigate further the long-term toxicity to fish.

No experimental data on long-term toxicity to fish are available for Fatty acids, C16-18, tetraesters with 3,3'-oxybis[1,2-propanediol] (CAS 91050-80-5). The chemical safety assessment according to Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 does not indicate the need to investigate further the long-term toxicity to fish. Based on the short-term fish results, it can be concluded that Fatty acids, C16-18, tetraesters with 3,3'-oxybis[1,2-propanediol] will not exhibit short-term effects to fish up to the limit of water solubility. Based on the available data, no effects up to a loading rate of 1000 mg/L were observed in short-term studies with marine invertebrates and marine algae.
Additionally, the concentration of Fatty acids, C16-18, tetraesters with 3,3'-oxybis[1,2-propanediol] in surface water is expected to be very low due to the low water solubility (< 0.05 mg/L) and the ready biodegradability. Due to the low water solubility only low concentrations of this substance are expected to be bioavailable in water. Since Fatty acids, C16-18, tetraesters with 3,3'-oxybis[1,2-propanediol] is readily biodegradable this substance will be eliminated in sewage treatment plants to a high extent. Furthermore, high adsorption potential further promotes rapid removal from waste water. If fractions of this chemical were to be released in the aquatic environment, the concentration in the water phase will be reduced by rapid biodegradation and potential of adsorption to solid particles and to sediment. Thus, long-term exposure to aquatic organisms is not expected due to the low bioavailability of the substance in the aquatic compartment.
In conclusion, as no effects were observed in the short-term fish test and only low concentrations of the test substance are expected in the aquatic compartment, no chronic toxicity to fish up to the water solubility is expected. Therefore, no further long-term test with fish is required for Fatty acids, C16-18, tetraesters with 3,3'-oxybis[1,2-propanediol].
