Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

Thirty male guinea pigs were divided into 3 groups of 10: negative control using 0.05 ml of saline, positive control using 0.05 ml of 0.3% solution of dinitr-chlorobenzene, and 0.05 ml of a 5% solution of 2 -NP at the begining of the test. At 48 hours the animals were injected with 0.1 ml of test solution, 2 -3 times/week until 10 injections were made. In the test group, only two injection were made with the 5% of the test solution due to visible necrosis at the test site. The rest of the injections were made with 1% test material.

After a rest period of 2 weeks the test animals were challenged with 0.1 ml of 1% test solution. None of the test animals showed a positive response. The negative and positive controls gave the appropriate response.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
One key study was identified regarding the sensitization potential of 2-nitropropane (2-NP) in the guinea pig.

Justification for classification or non-classification

None of the guinea pigs show a skin sensitization reaction when challenged with 2 -nitropropane, therefore 2 -NP is not classifiable under GHS
