Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets
Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data
First-aid measures
Emergency measure - Inhalation: After inhalation:
Move to fresh air. If you feel unwell, seek medical
advice.
Emergency measure - Eyes: After contact with the eyes:
Rinse immediately with gently running water for 15
minutes, maintaining eyelids open. Consult an
ophthalmologist or a physician.
Emergency measure - Skin: After contact with the skin:
Rinse skin immediately with copious amounts of water.
Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Consult a
physician if any symptoms develop.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: After ingestion or accident:
Only as long as the patient is fully conscious: wash
mouth and have the victim drink copious amounts of water
(often vomiting will be induced). Consult a physician
immediately or call for an ambulance and show label.
Fire-fighting measures
Recommended extinguishing agent: Water, foam & dry powder
Product arising from burning: CO2
Product determined by test: N
Protective equipment: The on-site fire crews would tackle any localised fire with
a dry powder extinguisher. If a major fire was involved,
the foam-enhanced building sprinkler system would
automatically activate. The building drainage system is
arranged such that all fire water run-off is captured within
a 200 M3 catchment tank. The contents of the catchment
tank would be analysed and if required, all of the liquid
would be sent for incineration. If there is a risk of fume
inhalation, the firemen would wear a Kappler responder gas-
tight suit (to standard ASTM F1001 chemical test battery and
ASTM F739 Permeation Test)
Accidental release measures
Emergency measures in case of spillage: In the event of spillage, the liquid will be contained by
use of adsorbent 'pigs' and the use of loose adsorbent
vermiculite. Drainage covers would be blanked off and the
residues would be wiped and scraped up. All such
collections of spilled waste would be securely contained and
sent for incineration. In bulk, within the drum container,
the substance has a tendency to remain in the liquid form
below its melting point of 30°C, but upon being spilled,
tends to 'shock' into the solid form. This would aid in
preventing the substance entering the wider environment.
Handling and storage
Handling: Please see the details contained in section 2.1.50
Storage: MALAM liquid will be supplied in 200 kg net weight steel
drums. The enclosed substance will be stored under cover in
a warehouse unit until required for use in the production
building. Only the required amount for one batch will be
transferred to the production building at any time.
Packaging of the substance and or preparation: The substance will be supplied in 200 litre capacity mild
steel drums

Stability and reactivity
Danger other than fire: No other particular danger known.
Chemical reaction with water: No formation of explosive vapours.
Dust explosion: It is not relevent as the substance is a undercooled liquid.
Dust explosion determined by test: N
Disposal considerations
Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: It is envisaged that all of the notified substance will be
consumed in the process, therefore recovery is not
applicable.
Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The substance is a tertiary amine and therefore basic in
chemical character. It can be chemically neutralised by the
addition of a mineral acid e.g. hydrochloric acid, to
produce the hydrochloride salt. However, since this would
render the substance more soluble in water and taking into
account the danger the substance poses to the environment,
this mode of neutralisation would not be attempted.
Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not applicable.
Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: All process effluent will be contained, not allowed to enter
the environment and will be sent for incineration within
the UK
Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not applicable.
Industry - Possibility of destruction - other: Not applicable.
Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not applicable.
Public at large - Possibility of neutralisation: Not applicable.
Public at large - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not applicable.
Public at large - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Not applicable.
Public at large - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not applicable.
Public at large - Possibility of destruction - others: Not applicable.
