Description of key information

The data of irritation potential of methylamine are waived from the acute toxicity studies (see 7.2.1. Acute toxicity oral, BASF-Test and 7.2.2. Acute toxicity inhalation, BASF-Test, Acute toxicity dermal: Goffman and Maguire, 1980).

Additional information

Monomethylamine caused eye, nose and throat irritation if inhaled. Administered orally to the rats, methylamine was corrosive to stomach. Liquefied methylamine (or in contact with moist skin) caused necrosis in the guinea pigs skin which was evident for histological evaluation after 48 hours. In concentrations of 141 ppm a 50 % decrease of the respiratory rate in rats was found (Gagnaire etal., 1989).
