Description of key information
1,1,1 -trifluoroethane is a gas with a boiling point of -47.4 deg C. It is therefore difficult to dissolve in water and will rapidly partition into the air. For that reason, aquatic toxicity studies were limited. It had a 96 -hr LC50 in trout of > 40mg/l (analytically measured), nominal 350 mg/l. EcoSar model v0.99 predicted 109 mg/l for fish. The 48 -hr EC50 for daphnia was determined to be 300 mg/l (analytically determined). EcoSar model v0.99 predicted the EC50 to be 115 mg/l for Daphnia. At the time 1,1,1-trifluoroethane was being studied, test methods did not exist to study the effects of such volatile materials on algae. Data on 1 -chloro-1,1 -difluoroethane was used as a read across substance. The EC50 was > 44 mg/l the highest level that could be tested due to evaporation of the test space into the head space above the medium. The EcoSar model v0.99 predicted the EC50 for 1,1,1-trifluoroethane to be 71 mg/l. As a final evaluation, data from 1,1,1,2 -tetrafluoroethane we used as read across for the effects on Pseudomonous putida. The 6 -hr EC50 was found to be > 730 mg/l, the highest level tested. In summary, data from trifluoroethane, chlorodifluoroethane and tetrafluoroethane indicate that trifluoroethane is not toxic.
