Eye irritation
Administrative data
- Endpoint:
- eye irritation: in vitro / ex vivo
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study need not be conducted because the substance is a strong acid (pH <= 2.0) or base (pH => 11.5)

Note B :
Some substances (acids, bases, etc.) are placed on the market in aqueous solutions at various concentrations and, therefore, these solutions
require different classification and labelling since the hazards vary at different concentrations.
In Part 3 entries with Note B have a general designation of the following type: ‘nitric acid … %’.In this case the supplier must state the percentage
concentration of the solution on the label. Unless otherwise stated, it is assumed that the percentage concentration is calculated on a weight/weight basis.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Interpretation of results:
- Category 1 (irreversible effects on the eye) based on GHS criteria
- Remarks:
- Migrated information Criteria used for interpretation of results: other: CLP Directive: EC 1272/2008 ( EU GHS)
- Executive summary:
There is sufficient human data and information from animal testing indicating that formic acid is corrosive to the skin and causes eye damage.
Conclusion:
There is sufficient human data and information from animal testing to classify formic. In accordance with Annex XI, No. 1.1. of the REACH regulation,
testing is therefore scientifically not justified.
