Principles of method if other than guideline:
Samples of the test item and of a reference material (empty crucible) are subjected to the same controlled temperature programme. When the test substance undergoes a phase transition or decomposition the corresponding change of enthalpy gives an endothermic (melting) or exothermic (caused by freezing or decomposition) departure from the base line of the temperature record.
