Description of key information

Appearance:

On the basis of physical observation, test chemical was observed to be off-white coloured crystalline powder in appearance.

Melting point:

The melting point determination of test chemical was done as per the test guideline OECD 102. The method followed was according to Capillary/metal block. The Mean Melting Point was determined to be 148.5 - 153.8°C at 979.5 hPa.

Boiling Point:

The boiling point determination of Test item was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method followed was according to Siwoloboff. The boiling point was determine to be greater than 300°C at 976.9 hPa.

Density:

The density of Test item was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02. The mean density of the test item was determine to be 1.4384 g/cm³ at 20°C and 975.9 hPa.

Particle size distribution:

The particle size distribution of test item was determined by granulometric analysis with Rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determine to be in the range of 150 micron to 53 micron.

 

Vapour pressure:

The Modified Grain method was used to estimate the vapour pressure of test chemical using MPBPVP v1.43 Program of EPI SUITE. The vapor pressure of test chemical was estimated to be 0.00944 Pa at 25 deg C.

Partition coefficient:

Based on the available data from study report, the partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of test chemical 1-hydroxybenzotriazole was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. A test item solution was prepared by accurately weighing 5 mg of test item and diluted with methanol up to 10 ml. Thus, the test solution concentration was 500 mg/l. The pH of test substance was 4.90. The reference substances were chosen according to functional similarity with the test substance and calibration graph was prepared .The reference substances were Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, n-Butylbenzene, Naphthalene having Pow value ranging from 2.1 to 4.6. The Log Pow value of the test chemical 1-hydroxybenzotriazole was determined to be 0.146 ± 0.007 dimensionless at 25°C. On the basis of this value, test chemical 1-hydroxybenzotriazole can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility:

The water solubility determination of test item was done as per the OECD guideline 105 and by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of test chemical in water was determined to be 4200.52 mg/L at 29°C.Thus, it can be concluded that test chemical is soluble in water.

Surface tension:

The study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the material. In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex VII, information requirement 7.6, this end point was considered for waiver since surface activity was not a desired property of test chemical.

Flash point:

The flash point determination of test item was done. The method is closed cup method using Pensky-Martens Flash Point Apparatus. The flash point of the test item was determine to be 145°C at 980.1 hPa.

Auto flammability:

The study does not need to be conducted for explosives. In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted because test chemical is an explosive substance. Hence, this endpoint was considered for waiver.

Flammability:

The study does not need to be conducted for explosives. In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted because test chemical is a solid and possesses an explosive property. Hence, this endpoint was considered for waiver.

Explosiveness:

Based on the available data from an authoritative database, test chemical was observed to have fire explosion hazard and hence classified under explosive Division 1.3 based on CLP criteria.

Oxidizing properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidising properties and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

pH:

The pH determination of test item was done as per the test guideline OECD 122. The mean pH of the test solution was determined with the help of digital pH meter. The mean pH was determine to be 2.89 at 29 °C. This value indicates that the substance is acidic in nature.

Viscosity:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid. This end point was considered for waiver since viscosity is an inherent property of a liquid that offers resistance to its flow and test chemical is a solid substance and hence this testing was considered scientifically unjustified for test chemical.

Based on the data from other supporting studies from various reliable sources such as handbooks and authoritative databases, the melting point of test chemical was concluded to be in the range of 156 °C to 160 °C which is in the range of key study value.

The boiling point determination of Test item was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method followed was according to Siwoloboff. The boiling point was determine to be greater than 300°C at 976.9 hPa.

Density:

The density of Test item was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the method adapted from ASTM D 854-02. The mean density of the test item was determine to be 1.4384 g/cm³ at 20°C and 975.9 hPa.

From reliable sources density of test chemical is determine to be 1.3228 g/cm3 at temperature 25 Deg C.

Additional study from authoritative and modelling databases indicates that the octanol water partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the test chemical was estimated to be 0.11.

Thus, based on the available information, the logPow value of the test chemical ranges from 0.11 to0.146, respectively. On the basis of this value, test chemical 1-hydroxybenzotriazole can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.
