- Endpoint:
- flash point of flammable liquids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 16 July
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: Fully documented study run under GLP and according to international guidelines.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.9 (Flash-Point)
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Type of method:
- equilibrium method closed cup
- Flash point apparatus:
- Abel apparatus

- Remarks on result:
- other: Pre-test
- Flash point:
- -6 °C
- Atm. press.:
- 994 hPa
- Remarks on result:
- other: First main study.
- Interpretation of results:
- Category 2 (highly flammable liquids) based on GHS criteria
- Conclusions:
- The flash point of reaction mass of 2,2'-oxybisbutane (DSBE), DIPE, SBA and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (TBA) is stated as -4.5 °C at standard pressure. Hence, the reaction mass of of 2,2'-oxybisbutane (DSBE), DIPE, SBA and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (TBA) is classified with F, R11 (highly flammable) according to DPD or as Flam. liquid cat. 2, H225 (highly flammable liquid and vapor) according to the CLP regulation.
- Executive summary:
The flash point of reaction mass of 2,2'-oxybisbutane (DSBE), DIPE, SBA and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (TBA) was determined with -4.5 °C (value corrected to standard pressure), this value is the mean of two independent determinations.
The flash point (following Abel - Closed Cup) is -4.5 °C.
Reference
Because the flash point of the pre-test and the flash point of the main study differed by less than 2 K, no further testing was necessary.
The flash point at standard pressure was calculated using the following equation.
F = C + 0.025 * (1013 – P)
C = measured temperature in °C
P = measured atmospheric pressure in hPa (mbar)
F = flash point at 1013.25 hPa in °C
Table 1 Result
Measured Flash point in °C |
Pressure in hPa |
Corrected Flash point in °C |
-4.0 |
994.50 |
-3.5 |
-6.0 |
994.00 |
-5.5 |
According to ISO 13736, the value should be rounded to 0.5 K.
Therefore, the flash point is stated as -4.5 °C.
Description of key information
The flash point of “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” was measured under GLP and according to the test guideline EU A.9. The mean of two independent determinations at standard pressure was -4.5 °C.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
- -4.5 °C
Additional information
The flash point of “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” was measured under GLP and according to the test guideline EU A.9. The mean of two independent determinations at standard pressure was -4.5 °C.
As the boiling point was determined being 70 - 122 °C, the “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” is classified with F, R11 (highly flammable) according to DPD or as flammable liquid cat. 2, H225 (highly flammable liquid and vapor) according to the CLP regulation.
