Description of key information

The application, by semi-occlusive bandage, of 0.5 g of L-cysteine, out of three rabbits, for 4 hours (OECD 404), showed neither irritant effects nor effects corrosive, neither mortality nor significant clinical signs of toxicity (period of observation = 72 hours). (*)

0.1 g of pure L-cysteine was administered in the conjunctival sac of 3 rabbits and the eyes have not been rinsed for 24 hours.

After the application of the substance, slight irritant effects were observed, totally reversible within 48 hours.

At the end of the observation period (72 hours), by fluorescein analysis, none of the animals reported corneal injuries. (*)

In addition, the application of one solution, almost neutral, to 3% of L-cysteine in the eyes of being human, has not caused adverse effects. (**)
