Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

In GLP compliant tests the test substance was assessed by following OECD Guideline 209. On exposing the activated sludge to test substance for 3 h at several concentrations respiratory inhibition was measured. The results from the two studies indicate the 3 h EC50 value to be greater than 5000 or 2000 mg/l respectively.

The test was conducted with Reactive Black 5 which easily degrades to Reactive Black 5 bis-vinyl in the presence of water. The inoculum was 1.6 g/L; the graph of the dose-effect curve shows that there is no dose-dependency at concentrations of 2500, 5000 and 10000 mg/L.

Due to the nearly parallel curve progression to the "concentration axis" it is assumed that there is definitely no inhibition up to a concentration of 5000 mg/L and most likely no inhibition at a concentration of 10000 mg/L.

Hence, Reactive Black 5 is not harmful to activated sludge. The EC50 lies above 10000 mg/L
