Poison centre guidance updated to help companies notify

The updated guidance on Annex VIII to CLP (version 4.0) addresses issues identified by certain industry sectors resulting from the requirements for poison centre notifications that were introduced in 2017. Sector- specific solutions are included for fuel, petroleum and construction products. As mixtures used in these sectors often have high or unpredictable composition variability, the solutions help companies reduce the number of notifications and unique formula identifiers (UFIs) required. Similar support is offered for those dealing with bespoke paints that are formulated in stores to satisfy customer demand.

The update also outlines cross-sector solutions for companies that use multiple suppliers for the components of a particular mixture. These can be applied when the components are similar enough for their toxicological profiles and technical functions to be considered equivalent.

The guidance has been consulted with a dedicated Partner Expert Group (PEG), national enforcement authorities, as well as the European Commission and Member State competent authorities. The draft guidance documents revised during the update process and feedback from the different consultation rounds are available on ECHA’s website.

The labelling and packaging guidance has also been updated to reflect changes concerning bespoke paints.
