Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

SKIN IRRITATION

The substance is considered to be described by the GHS category Skin Mild Irrit 3. However, further animal testing is contraindicated by clear systemic toxicity, and available data suggest that methacrylonitrile does not meet criteria for classification as a skin irritant under the terms of Directive 67/548/EEC or GHS as reflected by Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, which does not recognise the category Skin Mild Irrit 3.

EYE IRRITATION

Published data indicates that methacrylonitrile is a mild or moderate irritant to rabbit eyes. Eye irritation was also experienced by 22 % of human subjects when exposed to 24 ppm for 1 min even though no irritation was noted at lower concentrations. Further data shows that methacrylonitrile caused irritation of the nose, throat or eyes in some subjects at concentrations of 2 ppm and 14 ppm when the exposure period was increased to 10 minutes.

However, further animal testing is contraindicated by clear systemic toxicity and the availability of human data showing variation of irritation response between subjects.
