In contact with water the substance will hydrolyse slowly.

Hydrolysis half-life was calculated using SRC Hydrowin v1.67 which is implemented within the EpiSuite v3.20 model calculation tool. Due to the amide group (C=ON) hydrolysis is possible. As the rate of hydrolysis is estimated to be extremely slow corresponding to a half-life > 1 year it can be concluded that hydrolysis is neither an important process in the fate of 1-ethylpyrrolidin-2-one nor had any considerable effect on the stability of the test substance during the aquatic toxicity studies performed with the substance.
