Additional information
3,5,5 -trimethylhexanoic acid is not acutely toxic to fish (LC50 > 100 mg/L), but acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates and algae.
Fish:
Regarding fish acute toxicity, a 96-h LC50 of 122 mg/L was reported in the key study with the cold water fish rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; Davi, 1996), confirmed in a second test using the same species with a 96 -h LC50 of 160 mg/L (Hoechst AG, 1979). For warm water fish the reported 96 -h LC50 was 190 mg/L (Lepomis gibbosus; Hoechst AG, 1979).
Aquatic invertebrates:
The following effect concentrations were determined in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 202. The test item concentrations were analytically verified.
Daphnia magna: 48 -h EC50: 68 mg/L
Algae:
The following effect concentrations were determined in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 201. The test item concentrations were analytically verified.
Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata: 72 -h ErC50: 81 mg/L; 72 -h NOEC: 10 mg/L
Microorganisms:
The key study on the effect of 3,5,5,-trimethylhexanoic acid was tested on activated sludge microoorganisms. The 3 -h EC50 of 470 mg/L indicates that disturbances in sewage treatment plants are not to be expected when 3,5,5,-trimethylhexanoic acid are introduced in appropriately low concentrations (Hoechst AG, 1989).
