First-aid measures

Inhalation : Move the person away from the contaminated area.  Make the affected person rest.  If necessary seek medical advice.

Skin contact : Remove all contaminated clothing and footwear.  Wash with soap and water.  In case of inflammation (redness, irritation) obtain medical attention.

Eye contact : Immediately rinse with plenty of running water for a prolonged period, (at least 15 minutes) whilst keeping the eyes wide open If irritation persists, consult a doctor.

Ingestion : NEVER attempt to induce vomiting.  Rinse mouth out with water.

If necessary seek medical advice.

Further Information : Use appropriate protective equipment when treating a contaminated person.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable : All extinguishing agents can be used (water, foam, powders, carbon dioxide, sand).

Not suitable : None. If there is a fire close by, use suitable extinguishing agents.

Specific hazards : Toxic gases or vapours are released.

Protection of fire-fighters : Self-contained breathing apparatus.  Complete protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions : Avoid contact with skin and eyes.  If spillage occurs on the public highway, indicate the danger and notify the authorities (police, fire brigade).  Full protective clothing and equipment.

Environmental precautions : Prevent the product from spreading into the environment.  Contain the spilled material by bunding.

Recovery : Recover as much of the product as possible. Absorb the product onto porous material. Transfer the product into a spare container: suitably labelled. Then take the emergency containers to an area reserved for subsequent recycling or disposal.

Neutralization : Absorb spillage with: diatomaceous earth; sand or inert absorbent.

Cleaning/Decontamination : Wash non-recoverable remainder with large amounts of water.  Recover the cleaning water for subsequent disposal.

Disposal : Place in an appropriate container and dispose of the contaminated material at a licensed site.

Handling and storage

Technical measures : Does not require any specific or particular measures.

Measures : Work in a well-ventilated area.  Avoid forming aerosols.  Avoid the formation of mists in the atmosphere.  Do NOT handle without gloves.

Safe handling advice : Handle and use in accordance with good occupational hygiene

and safety practice.

Technical measures : Take all necessary measures to avoid accidental discharge of products into drains and waterways due to the rupture of containers or transfer systems.

Storage conditions

Recommended : Store: in a cool, dry area.

Incompatible products : None, to our knowledge.

Packaging : Polyethylene or polypropylene drums. (high density)

Recommended : Plastic materials (polyethylene, polypropylene) (high density).

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering measures : No specific measures are required provided the product is handled in accordance with the general rules of occupational hygiene and safety.

Exposure limit values (Human Health)

2-Butoxyethanol: VME: 9.8 mg/m3 (2ppm)

VLE: 147.6 mg/m3 (30 ppm)

n-Butyl alcohol: VLE: 150 mg/m3 (50 ppm)

ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (U.S.A./A.C.G.I.H.) :

2-Butoxyethanol TLV ( TWA ) : 20 ppm

n-Butyl alcohol TLV ( TWA ) : 20 ppm

WEL: 25 ppm (8h TWA).

WEL: 50 ppm (15 minute STEL).

(Sk - can be absorbed through the skin).

WEL: 50 ppm (154 mg/m3) (15 minute STEL).

(Sk - can be absorbed through the skin).

Occupational exposure limit values (EU) :

2-Butoxyethanol: Exposure limit (8 hours) : 98 mg/m3 (20 ppm)

Exposure limit (Short term) : 246 mg/m3 (50 ppm)

Respiratory protection : If mist is formed: Respiratory protective device with a particle filter.

Hand protection : Use suitable chemical-resistant protective gloves (compliant with Standard EN 374-1).  Protective gloves must be chosen according to the function of the work station: other chemicals which may be handled, physical protection necessary (resistance to cutting, puncture, heat), dexterity required

Eye protection : Safety spectacles with side shields.

Skin and body protection : Protective clothing.  Safety foot-wear.

Hygiene measures : Use clean and correctly maintained personal protective equipment

Keep personal protective equipment in a clean place, away from the work area.  Always wash your hands after handling the product.  Do NOT eat or drink in the workplace.

Stability and reactivity

Stability : Stable under normal conditions of use.

Conditions to avoid : Decomposes : above 200oC.

Materials to avoice : No dangerous reaction known with common products.

Hazardous decomposition products : On combustion or on thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) releases: (phosphorus oxides) (carbon oxides (CO + CO2)).

Disposal considerations

Prohibition : Do NOT discharge waste into drains.

Destruction/Disposal : Dispose of in accordance with relevant local regulations.  Incinerate at a licensed installation.

Decontamination/cleaning : Empty the packaging completely prior to disposal.  Rinse with an appropriate solvent.  Recover the solvent used for rinsing and incinerate at a licensed site.  Bulk : decontamination by an authorised cleaning contractor.

Destruction/Disposal : Depending on local facilities, recycle or incinerate the packaging at an authorised site.

NOTE : The user's attention is drawn to the possible existence of local regulations regarding disposal.
