Soil microbial process tests evaluate the native soil microbial communities exposed to the substance. From the database of cobalt toxicity to micro-organisms, there are 28 individual high quality NOEC/EC10 values evaluating 3 functional parameters (potential nitrification rate, glucose induced respiration and maize residue mineralization) from 10 natural soils collected from sites in Europe and North America. When expressed as added soil Co, these endpoints range from 5.5 mg Co/kg dw for Glucose induced respiration (Salpeteur et al, University of Leuven, 2007) to 4695 mg Co/kg dw for Maize residue respiration (Salpeteur et al, University of Leuven, 2007). Below are the accepted high quality studies for soil microorganisms used for derivation of the HC5 and terrestrial PNEC.
