Description of key information
Tartaric acid and its salts have negligible vapour pressures.

A collection of the vapour pressure values was performed for tartaric acid and its salts.
For tartaric acid the determination of vapour pressure was performed in compliance with guidelines OECD No. 104 (Vapour Pressure Curve, Gas saturation method) and Council Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, A.4 (Vapour Pressure, Gas Saturation Method) and under GLP standards. The vapour pressure of tartaric acid was resulted lower than the limit of detection (L.O.D.) of the analytical method (i.e. < 0,000000393 mmHg at 40°C and 20°C). In addition, one literature data of vapour pressure for tartaric acid was available (i.e. 0.0000000493 Torr at 25°C).
Vapour pressure of calcium tartrate was determined according to OECD Guideline 104: the vapour pressure of the test item extrapolated at 25 °C is P = 2.8 x 10-5 Pa.
Since these numbers are extremely low, the vapor pressure was deemed to be a negligible properties for tartaric acid and its salts.
The key value for the chemical safety assessment was < 0,000000393 mmHg at 20°C.
