Table 1: Validity criteria for OECD 209.
Criterion from the guideline
Validity criterion fulfilled
The blank controls (without the test substance or reference substance) oxygen uptake rate should not be less than 20 mg oxygen per one gram of activated sludge (dry weight of suspended solids) in an hour.
The coefficient of variation of oxygen uptake rate in control replicates should not be more than 30% at the end of definitive test.
The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated (EC10 > 1000 mg/L).
The toxicity of the substance to microorganisms was investigated
in a study according to OECD 209. The test was conducted at nominal test
concentrations of 100, 180, 320, 580 and 1000 mg/L. The respiration rate
of activated sludge, taken from a municipal sewage treatment plant, was
recorded for 3 hours. An inhibition of the respiration rate was not
observed. The determined EC50 (3 h) was > 1000 mg/L.
Based on the available study results, the substance is not
considered toxic to microorganisms.
