Two studies on the toxicity of tin to soil microorganisms were identified. Both studies were non-standard and neither reported NOEC or EC10. However, as they investigated soil respiration and nitrification which are standard endpoints they are considered acceptable. Neither study reports at what level effects were statistically significantly different from the controls. However, NOEC and/or EC10 were calculated based on data presented in Liang and Tabatabai (1977) and Lighthart et al (1983). The NOEC for nitrogen mineralisation range from 297 -593 mg Sn/kg dw and for respiration the EC10 range from 6.8 -760 mg Sn/kg dw. Due to the significant restrictions of these two studies, they are not considered suitable for the derivation of a soil PNEC, but can be used as indicative of concentrations at which effects may be observed.
FOREGS (http://www.gtk.fi/publ/foregsatlas/index.php), an EU wide survey to determine baseline levels of many elements in the environment from sites with low anthropogenic input includes measurements for tin. The median and mean concentrations of total tin in EU topsoils are 3.0 and 4.5 mg/kg dw respectively. In addition, another Europe wide monitoring programme (GEMAS) has just reported (Reimann et al, 2009). Samples were taken from agricultural and grazing soils. Pristine sample sites were not selected but point sources were avoided as far as possible. The mean concentration in 124 agricultural soils was 0.89 mg/kg dw (range 0.7 -1.34) and in 118 grassland soils was 1.5 mg/kg dw (range 0.8 -13.1). The concentrations reported in the GEMAS study are below those reported by FOREGS.
