Additional information

The adsorption and desorption of the test item were determined in a screening test by the batch equilibrium method using two sewage sludges from a municipal and from a industrial source.

A preliminary test was perfomed to establish a suitable analytical procedure. The substance could be analysed in a concentration range of 5.8 mg/l to 0.26 mg/l. Adsorption solutions were analysed for test substance by UV/VIS spectroscopy. The sewage sludges were conditioned with aqueous solutions of 5°dH and 30°dH hardness, respectively, before the addition of the test substances.

For the screening test, 1 to 1.7 g wet sludges were treated with 25 ml of solutions at different hardnesses (5°dH and 30°dH) containing the test substance. The ratio of the sludge dry weight to aqueous solution was about 1 to 250 for the industrial sludge and about 1 to 400 to the municipal sludge. The adsorption was performed in duplicate at a concentration of about 5 mg of the test item per litre. The whole amount of the test item was adsorbed within two hours for the sludges at the two hardnesses tested.

After the adsorption, one desorption step was performed, in which 25 ml of untreated corresponding aqueous solution was added to each sludge sample and the mixtures were shaken for 16 hours. Almost no test substance could be desorbed.

An adsorption coeficient of over 10'000 ml/g was estimated with reference to the limit of quantification of the test item in the solutions.

The test item can therefore be regarded as immobile in sludge.
