Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex IX and X, section 9.4.3 and 9.4.6, a long- and short-term toxicity to plants test, does not need to be conducted as direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. Cesium ions have a very low potential to adsorb to soil (silicate minerals only; not displaceable once bound to crystalline structure and therefore not available for plants nutrition) and hydroxide ions may react with free H+ or any acidic species that may be present, forming water. According to the available information, an input via sludge application on agricultural soil is considered to be negligible, as cesium ions do not adsorb to the sewage sludge to a significant extent. Pursuant to its physico-chemical properties, cesium ions from cesium hydroxide and its monohydrate are not expected to be distributed into soil. The estimated log Pow of cesium hydroxide  (anhydrous and monohydrate) is expected to be ≤0 due to its salt character and high water solubility. It can be concluded, that the risk for the terrestrial compartment is low and no further information and/or testing is needed.
