In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation EC (No) 1907/2006 Annex VII, section 8.3, the skin sensitisation study does not need to be conducted as cesium hydroxide monohydrate and cesium hydroxide anhydrous are corrosive to the skin due to their strong basic character (pH > 11.5).

Supporting study:

In a dermal sensitization study with cesium hydroxide (0.1 %) in water, young adult male albino guinea pigs (in total 15 animals) were tested using the method of Landsteiner and Jacobs (1935). The test compound was administered intradermally three times a week, for a total of nine treatments. Following a two-week period with no further injections a challenge of 0.1% was administered the same way. There was no evidence of erythema, swelling or discoloration of the test sites after each of the nine sensitizing cutaneous injections or after the challenge dose. These results indicate that cesium hydroxide did not induce cutaneous sensitisation in guinea pigs.

Due to the skin corrosive properties and based on the results obtained from the supporting study, neither cesium hydroxide monohydrate nor cesium hydroxide anhydrous were classified and labelled according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) with regard to sensitisation properties.
