Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Captan is of low hydrolytic stability depending of pH value. At pH 7 a half-life time of 4.9 hours was determined. Major decomposition product is carbon dioxide. Captan was not found to be ready biodegradable.

By water and water/sediment studies pathways for mineralisation of Captan are proposed.

In a new study (Völkel, 2022) on different soil types an adsorption coefficient of Koc(ads) 155 was determined. Desorption kinetics were not measured due to the instability of the test item.

In bioaccumulation studies with bluegill sunfish and captan labelled in two positions, the results were similar with whole fish BCF factors between 100 and 150. The BCF factors were higher in the viscera than the edible tissues. Residues were eliminated rapidly when the fish were transferred to clean water in both studies. The results indicate that captan is unlikely to accumulate in the aquatic environment or pose a significant risk to fish predators.

Results for the relevant tonnage are comparable to EFSA scientific report (2020) with detailed results on environmental fate and behaviour as captan is used as active ingredient in plant protection products.
