Description of key information

The toxicity of the test substance to microorganisms was determined in an activated sludge respiration inhibition test according to OECD TG 209 in compliance with GLP. In this study, sludge from a local municipal sewage treatment plant receiving predominantly domestic sewage was exposed to loading rates of 0, 46, 100, 220, 460 or 1000 mg/L for 3 hours. No statistically significant inhibition of the respiration rate of the sludge was recorded at or below a loading rate of 220 mg test substance/litre. At higher loading rates the inhibitory effect of the test substance on activated sludge bacteria increased with increasing loading rate, ranging from an average of 36% inhibition at a loading rate of 460 mg/L to an average of 49% at a loading rate of 1000 mg/L. Based on these findings, the 3-h EC50 value and 3-h NOEC were determined at 910 and 220 mg/L, respectively. The study met the acceptability criteria prescribed by the protocol and was considered valid.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
910 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
220 mg/L
