Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test
GLP compliance:
no
Analytical monitoring:
no
Vehicle:
no
Test organisms (species):
activated sludge, domestic
Details on inoculum:
The activated sludge inoculum used in this study originated from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The concentration of dry substance was 1 g/L.
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Total exposure duration:
30 min
Reference substance (positive control):
yes
Remarks:
3,5-dichlorophenol
Duration:
30 min
Dose descriptor:
EC0
Effect conc.:
>= 1 000 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
inhibition of total respiration
Remarks:
respiration rate
Duration:
30 min
Dose descriptor:
other: EC20
Effect conc.:
> 1 000 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
inhibition of total respiration
Remarks:
respiration rate
Details on results:
The EC20 in the activated sludge respiration test was > 100 mg/L. Disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are not to be expected if the test substance is correctly introduced into adapted wastewater treatment plants at low concentrations.
Results with reference substance (positive control):
EC50 (30 min) = 5.5 mg/L
EC90 (30 min) = 41 mg/L
