Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
18 October 1999 -03 November 1999
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.5 (Surface Tension)
GLP compliance:
yes
Type of method:
OECD harmonised ring method
Key result
Surface tension:
72.7 mN/m
Temp.:
19.5 °C
Conc.:
90 vol%
Conclusions:
Determined using the OECD harmonised ring method, the surface tension of a 90% saturated aqueous solution of NB 6786-35 was 72.7 mN/m at 19.5oC.
Executive summary:

In a GLP study, the surface tension of EC# 434-650-5 was determined using the OECD harmonised ring method (OECD Guideline 115). A test vessel containing a 90% saturated aqueous solution was positioned on a tensiometer test platform and the ring was positioned 2 -3 mm below the liquid surface. The platform was lowered to draw a lamella from the liquid surface. The maximum force, which arose just before the lamella was torn off, was used to calculate the surface tension (the calculation took into account the weight of the liquid in the lamella as drawn up by the ring, the solution density, the ring diameter, the wire diameter, acceleration due to gravity and the Harkins-Jordan correction).

The mean calculated surface tension at 19.5oC was 72.7 mN/m. This would not be considered surface active under the terms of the appropriate EC Directive, which stipulates that such substances have surface tensions of less than 60 mN/m.

Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across source
Key result
Surface tension:
72.81 mN/m

In view of the structural and chemical similarities, it is considered that the results of this study can be used for read-across to EC# 457-320-2.

Description of key information

Determined using the OECD harmonised ring method, the surface tension of a 90% saturated aqueous solution of a structurally similar material [NB 6786-35] was 72.7 mN/m at 19.5oC. This result can be read-across to EC# 457-320-2
